Local Transportation Program
Interlink Volunteers – Faith in Action provides regular transportation services, and the occasional out of town transport, for elders and others residing in Asotin County, Washington and Nez Perce County, Idaho. Since our founding March 1, 1984 we have served many residents, driving many miles, for a variety of transports. These include, and are not limited to: appointments for health care, personal care, and business; shopping; banking; food bank visits; and general errands.
Most transports are for elders, many of whom live alone. Most have a physical disability, with a good number using a cane or walker for assistance. Generally all our transports are completed Monday through Friday. All transports are completed in the personal vehicle of a volunteer.
Volunteer drivers are required to complete an application, provide copies of their driver’s license and liability insurance on their vehicle, and receive training along with a personal interview by the executive director.
Transports are arranged each day, with care-receivers making their requests by telephone. Occasionally a care-provider will make the request on behalf of their client.
Generally a volunteer will complete the two-way transport for an opportunity; picking up the care-receiver(s) at their home and returning them home following their requested service. In September 2007, we began a program called the 40-minute volunteer. These volunteers are generally working in a job where immediate contact is available via cell phone or email. They agree to a one-way transport, which generally takes 40 minutes from the time they leave their desk, pick up the care-receive to bring to an appointment or to home, and return to their office.
All transports are offered with no solicitation or demand for payment. When asked, we offer the opportunity to make a donation to our agency.
In 2008 43 volunteers provided over 1,630 hours of service, driving over 23,700 miles, providing over 1,400 two way transports to 161 care-receivers.
